Sustainability

A lighter way to make a shirt.

Why we chose hemp, what can fairly be said about it today, and what we will publish as the work progresses.

Our approach

Claims we can stand behind

Sustainability is easy to promise and hard to prove. Orré is in development, so this page separates what is generally true of hemp as a fibre from what we will document about our own fabric and suppliers once they are confirmed.

The *fibre*
01

The fibre

Hemp is a bast fibre that grows quickly. It is generally grown with less water than cotton and with few pesticides, and its fibre is long and strong, which is why hemp cloth lasts.

The *cloth*
02

The cloth

Hemp cloth breathes well and softens with wear and washing instead of wearing thin. A shirt that improves with age is worn for longer, and wearing a shirt longer is the simplest way to reduce its impact.

The way we *work*
03

The way we work

We are designing a small, focused range rather than a fast-changing one. We will name our mill and publish the fabric specification once they are confirmed, and we will not claim certifications we do not hold.

What we hold ourselves to

01

Say only what is true

Every claim on this site will be something we can explain and, where it matters, document.

02

Name our suppliers

The mill, the fibre and the blend will be stated plainly once confirmed, not hidden behind general phrases.

03

Design for long wear

Cut, stitching and cloth are chosen so the shirt can be worn, washed and mended for years.
